วันนี้มาหัดใช้สำนวน on the other hand ซึ่งแปลว่า ในอีกแง่หนึ่ง หรือ คิดในแง่ที่กลับกัน สำนวนนี้ ถ้าใช้ เต็ม ๆ ก็เป็นสองประโยค ประโยคแรกนำด้วย On one hand หรือ On the one hand และประโยคที่สองนำด้วย On the other hand หรืิอ But on the other hand เช่น
- On the one hand, he is a strong man, but on the other hand, he cannot run very fast. ในแง่หนึ่งเขาเป็นคนที่แข็งแรงมาก แต่ในอีกแง่หนึ่งเขากลับวิ่งได้ไม่ค่อยเร็วเท่าไร
- On the one hand, the price of a new phone is very cheap. On the other hand, my old phone is still working OK. ในแง่หนึ่งราคาโทรศัทพ์มือถือใหม่มันถูกมาก แต่ในอีกแง่หนึ่งโทรศัพท์เก่าเราก็ยังใช้ได้อยู่
บางทีภาษาพูดคนก็พูดยาวเหยียด ไม่ใช่แค่ประโยคเดียวในแต่ละส่วน และก็ไม่จำเป็นต้องพูด On the one hand ก็ยังได้ อยู่ดี ๆ จะพูดแย้งประเด็นของตัวเอง โดยใช้ on the other hand ก็ได้ ก็คล้าย ๆ กับใช้ but หรือ however ครับ เช่น ในประโยคข้างต้น เราจะว่า
- The price of a new phone is very cheap. On the other hand, my old phone is still OK.
- He is a very good man. His son, on the other hand, is selfish. เขาเป็นคนดีมาก แต่ลูกเขากลับเป็นคนเห็นแก่ตัว
เห็นไหมครับว่า สองประโยคหลังนี้ เราจะใช้ however แทนก็ได้ครับ ถูกไวยกรณ์ และความหมายก็ไม่ต่างกันนัก
